A referendum was approved by the voters of Lee County in March of 1992, and the Lee County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution on June 2nd of that year imposing a monthly fee per telephone line to establish an Enhanced 911 service. An E911 Coordinator was hired and the first order of business was to assign physical addresses to all structures in the couty since the previous system had been a rural route address. The original communication center was housed in the 1940's and 1950's. It had three foot thick concrete walls and no windows. The communication room was 11'x29' with the coordinator's office and equipment room behind that. A small room separated the front door from the communications room. The initial equipment was a pair of Motorola Centralink E-911 systems with Centracon Series II radio consoles.
At present, Lee County has four stations of Plant Telephone Vesta ANI/ALI controllers with Motorola radios and an Interact Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and mapping program. This allows all of the communication officers on duty to keep up with the location of all public safety officers who are available for service. Lee County is Phase 1 active for wireless providers and is in the process of applying for Phase 2 compliance. The center has two dispatchers on duty 24/7 with a third person in the center from noon until midnight. |
